My dad is an awesome guy, but he gave up skiing long before I came along. He did teach me how to play golf, swim, and do a backflip off the diving board — so there’s still a lot to love. But today, let’s celebrate the ski dads.
Ski dads are a special breed. They’re the ones who show up with endless enthusiasm and do the often backbreaking work of teaching little people not just how to ski, but how to love winter.
My husband is one of those dads. Like me, he learned later in life. For him, it was his junior year of college where he was guided by the Williams Ski Team through his very first turns at Brody Mountain (RIP Brody). Rental boots, jeans, icy conditions — none of it stopped him. He quickly fell in love with the sport and eventually introduced me to skiing too.
There was never any question that our kids would start skiing early. He researched the gear, lugged it around, and shuttled the kids to lessons. But gear and logistics alone don’t create kids who love hanging out in the cold. That part comes from the attitude and enthusiasm of the parents. And friends, my husband absolutely delivered.
Without him, our little ski family wouldn’t exist. So this Father’s Day, these are the gifts I’m eyeing for him. I hope this guide helps you find the just-right gift for the ski dad in your life.
I’d love to hear if your dad taught you to ski or any favorite ski memories.
